Singapore facing a watershed election
Among other reasons, the fact was that the opposition Barisan Socialis (Socialist Front) decided to boycott the General Election of 1968 and take politics to the streets. This resulted in the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) sweeping the polls. The PAP’s complete monopoly of Parliament lasted until 1981, when an opposition candidate won a seat in a by-election.
