Hong Kong-owned Galaxy Resort and Casino opened its first Macau Galaxy resort on July 4, 2004 - becoming the 14th casino to operate in the former Portuguese enclave, which is reputed to boast the world's most profitable gaming industry. The Galaxy Waldo Casino-Hotel, known in Cantonese simply as "wah dou" ("Chinese capital"), was officially opened at 2:56 pm, when its director, Francis Lui Yiu-tung, triggered a noisy confetti explosion in its lobby. The ceremony included traditional Chinese dragon dances and the din of fire crackers, as well as Las Vegas-style revue dancers.
The relatively small casino, which initially only comprises 83 slot machines, 23 gaming tables for the general public and eight gaming tables for high-stakes gamblers, is the first of three projects by the company, which in 2002 won one of Macau China's three rival gaming concessions, in an international tender that terminated a casino-monopoly system originally set up in 1937.
Galaxy Macau will open another urban Macau hotel and casino called StarWorld (next to Wynn Macau's urban casino project). StarWorld will be housed in a 33-story building, with a casino podium comprising 100 VIP rooms, 140 gaming tables, and 300 slot machines. The casino podium, the first phase of the project will open in the 3rd quarter of 2005. The StarWorld resort will have 600 hotel rooms.
The third Galaxy casino Macau can anticipate is the tentatively termed Cotai Mega Resort, planned to be completed in four phases by 2009. Cotai is the Portuguese acronym for a land reclamation development area between Macau's two off-shore islands, Coloane and Taipa. Lui, who hails from the established Hong Kong Lui family of casino operators, said last week the Cotai Strip development was planned to include four "giant casinos" and five luxury hotels.
Galaxy Waldo Macau has provided its casino operations with 53 MindPlay Baccarat tables that offer proprietary security features designed to thwart cheating. The new technology can electronically track every card dealt and determine expected results. Unauthorized cards and other variances can be immediately detected, and reported to the surveillance department through a networked client interface.

Galaxy's concession agreement with the Macau government includes an independently managed sub-concession, held by Las Vegas gaming mogul Sheldon Adelson's The Venetian, which opened its first Macao casino, Sands Macau, in May of 2004. Their mutual development of the Cotai Strip could be the most significant contribution to Macau tourism and its economy so far.
