BOKO HARAM TO BE DEALT WITH---FEDERAL GOVT
Disturbed by the daily killings of prominent Nigerians and destruction of valuables in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, by suspected members of the radical Islamic sect, Boko Haram, President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Hafiz Ringim, to put a stop to the violence.
Last week, a cleric and four others were killed when a church was bombed in Maiduguri,on Sunday, four people were also shot dead at a drinking garden. Before then, the younger brother of former Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, the governorship candidate of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), an Islamic cleric and others were also killed by suspected Boko Haram fundamentalists.
Speaking yesterday in Maiduguri, Ringim declared the determination of the Federal Government to deal ruthlessly with Boko Haram members,he said he was in the North-East state on Jonathan’s instruction “and with the donation of 10 Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) and intelligence gathering, we will deal with them”.He said the police force had changed its strategies with more emphasis on intelligence-gathering, insisting: “There will be no hiding place for any one who goes against the law of the land.”
He spoke shortly after receiving the 10 APCs and 10 Hilux patrol vehicles donated to the police by Governor Kashim Shettima. He said: “The logistics will not only enhance the operation of the Nigeria Police but will assist the entire security agencies in Borno State and Nigeria at large in our fight against the Boko Haram menace that has engulfed the state and other parts of the North for quite some time”.
He assured the public of confidentiality of all information given to security agencies and urged them to take advantage of the modern information technology which enables them to interact with the police without disclosing their identity.
He said the police rely heavily on the general public in their intelligence gathering “as the police cannot be everywhere”, adding that the police will soon embark on massive training of men of the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) to be in conformity with international standard.
Speaking earlier, Shettima had observed that the security situation in the state is of great concern to both the state and Federal Government.
